path-of-my-childhood:

“I think it’s fantastic. She’s had the success she’s had in order to be the voice that she is. Unfortunately for her, the brighter the spotlight the bigger the target. She means big money to people. When art is pitted up against commerce, there’s a lot of times a big struggle there. I think the message she’s sending and the fight that she’s fighting is one that as an artist, not just women, that we all relate to. The reality is this when you pull the curtain back on the music industry, it is not sexy at all, it is actually quite gross. What has happened in the music world is that the laws where streaming is concerned, the person (or entity) who owns the masters, get the lion’s share, not the artist. And when I say the lion’s share, I mean it is grossly the lion’s share. It’s parts of pennies to massive amounts of dollars. So then Taylor, in making the change she did and wanting to own her own masters, I can understand why she did it. We all want to do it because the reality is it’s unfair. Labels at the end of the day, if they do their job on the business end, in some ways they can be a bank and in some ways they can be marketers. That’s it. But the artists are the people creating the actual content and touching people’s hearts. It will take a legislative law change where rights and royalties are concerned in order to make a difference for artists. And the Grammys are doing wonderful work in advocating for artists where that’s concerned, but the labels, because they’re tricky and slick, and sometimes dark and backhanded, get in there before the artist does because they realize, ‘Oh wait a minute, if we can set this up this way, we’re going to make a killing.’ So that’s how they set up the laws to be. So yeah, I hear her fight and I support it. At the end of the day, I’m always going to support the artist. Always.”
